Accessories are what separate a considered outfit from an expensive one. The right pocket square, a silk tie knotted properly, a pair of cufflinks that catch the light while you're signing the register. None of it costs much next to the suit, and all of it shows up in the photographs. Here's how we would approach each decision, for Western suits and for Indian formal wear, and what we keep at the shop so you can try things against the actual garment.
The pocket square, and how to fold and wear it
On a Western wedding suit the pocket square does more work than anything else its size. It's where colour, texture and a bit of personality go, in the most visible spot on the jacket. Coordinate it with the tie or the wedding party's colours without matching either exactly, because a matched set looks like it came packaged together, which it usually did. A white linen square in a flat TV fold is never wrong. A silk one in a complementary colour with a looser fold says more about you. Keep it to natural fibres, linen or silk, never synthetic.
With Indian formal wear, a bandhgala, sherwani or kurta-bandi, the pocket square isn't a convention and isn't expected. Some grooms slip a small silk square into a bandhgala's breast pocket and it looks good on them. Treat it as a personal flourish rather than something the outfit is missing without it.
Ties, cufflinks and the working buttonhole
Ties for a wedding suit should be silk: a grenadine, or a solid woven silk in a colour that works with the suit. Think of the suit, tie and pocket square as three things that have to agree without repeating each other. We make silk and wool ties at the shop and can match one to the cloth you've chosen, which beats hunting for a shade across four shops in T. Nagar the week before.
Cufflinks finish a French-cuff dress shirt. Gold, silver, mother-of-pearl or enamel are all appropriate for a wedding. We keep a selection at the shop so you can try them against the actual shirt at your final fitting instead of guessing from a photograph.
Boutonnières are your call. A single fresh flower in the lapel buttonhole, a white gardenia, a carnation, a small rose, is an old British wedding detail and it adds a note of freshness to close-up photographs. It needs a working buttonhole in the lapel, which our bespoke jackets come with as standard. Tell us if you plan to use one and we'll size it for a stem.
