The bandhgala is a short, close-necked jacket with a stand collar and a button run from throat to hem, and it is the workhorse of Indian formal dress. Think of it as doing the job a suit jacket does: it belongs in the boardroom, in court, at a government function, at a wedding reception. Cut bespoke at Sellers in fine suiting wool or silk, it is one of the few garments that moves easily between the Indian and the Western half of a man's working life, which is why our customers usually order a second one within the year.
What gives the bandhgala its particular character
The collar makes the garment. It rises off the neck seam and fastens at the throat with a button or a hook, and unlike the Nehru jacket, which sits on a shorter band, the bandhgala collar has real height, usually 3.5 to 4.5 cm. That height is where the formality lives. The closure then runs in a straight single-breasted line from the collar button all the way to the hem, five to seven buttons depending on the length.
Because there are no lapels, the collar carries the whole front of the jacket. That is a design decision, not a shortcoming. Losing the lapel gives the bandhgala a cleanness that a suit jacket cannot manage, and it reads as every bit as formal. In a room where both Western and Indian formal dress are welcome, which in India is nearly every room, a bandhgala meets the dress code without pretending to be a suit.
The bandhgala at work: politicians, lawyers and executives
India's political class has dressed in bandhgalas since independence, in fine khadi or in suiting wool, and the association has stuck. Advocates increasingly wear one over a churidar or a formal trouser instead of a Western jacket. In business it says two things at once: that you take the meeting seriously, and that you are comfortable dressing as an Indian rather than borrowing someone else's uniform. That second message tends to land well with the people across the table.
The most useful working bandhgala is cut in a mid-weight suiting wool, the same cloths we use for our Western suits, in charcoal, navy or black. It reads as unambiguously formal anywhere in the country while keeping the Indian line. Pair it with a fine churidar or a well-cut formal trouser and you are correctly dressed anywhere a suit would have been correct.
Cloth and detail: the full range of the bandhgala
The bandhgala takes everything from fine suiting wool to raw silk to heavy brocade, and the cloth is what slides the jacket up and down the formality scale. Charcoal suiting wool gives you a working garment. Raw silk in ivory or cream gives you a wedding garment. Brocade gives you a ceremonial one. Same pattern, three quite different jackets.
Single-breasted is the standard and the most useful. Double-breasted bandhgalas exist, but they are rarer and they speak louder. Pocket treatment, jetted or flapped, and button choice, plain, self-covered or ornate in silver and gold, all get settled at the consultation once we know where you plan to wear it.
