The formal shirt is the most-worn garment in most working wardrobes, and the one people put the least thought into. A shirt that fits at the neck, sits correctly on the shoulder and ends at the right point on the hand changes how everything worn over it looks. Our shirt wall runs the length of the store, and everything on it can be adjusted by our own tailors.
The brands on the wall
We stock Van Heusen, Arrow, Louis Philippe, Park Avenue, Oxemberg and Linen Club across the formal range, with Allen Solly covering the smart-casual end. Between them they cover every price point from the everyday working shirt to the fine giza cottons.
Rather than a token rail of each, we stock in depth — full size runs in the core whites and blues, because those are the shirts people actually buy repeatedly and it is infuriating to find a store out of your size in a staple.
Getting the fit right
Three measurements decide whether a shirt looks right. The neck, which should admit one finger comfortably when buttoned. The shoulder seam, which must sit exactly at the edge of your shoulder bone — this is the one thing an alteration cannot fix cheaply, so it governs which size you buy. The sleeve, which should end at the base of the thumb.
Everything else — body width, waist suppression, sleeve width, overall length — we can adjust. So buy for the shoulder and the neck, and let the workshop handle the rest.
Choosing fabric for this climate
Chennai punishes the wrong fabric. High-synthetic shirts hold heat and show sweat; heavy oxfords are too much for most of the year. What works is fine cotton — poplin and voile for the hottest months, twill when you want a little more structure, linen and linen blends for the days when comfort outranks crispness.
Wrinkle-resistant finishes are genuinely useful here, particularly if you commute by two-wheeler or spend the day moving between air-conditioning and the street. They are not a gimmick; they are the difference between looking presentable at 5pm and not.
Altered in-house, by our own tailors
Every shirt bought here goes straight to our own bespoke workshop. Sleeve shortening, body taper, waist adjustment, collar work — done by the same master tailors who cut our made-to-measure shirts, usually within the week.
If you find you are altering every shirt substantially, it is usually a signal that your proportions sit outside the standard grades, and that having shirts made to your own pattern would cost less over a few years than repeatedly buying and correcting. We will say so if we think it applies to you.
