Rajput weddings are built on grandeur and the clothes carry it. Fine silk or brocade sherwanis, the safa with its sarpech, the long embroidered achkan: these are the markers, and they come out of a tradition that has never gone in for understatement. We make the sherwani and achkan side of a Rajput wedding wardrobe at the Adyar workshop, cut to the groom's own measurements and to his family's, in good cloth with embroidery that holds up to close inspection and to twenty years in a cupboard.
The sherwani: cloth, embroidery and how it comes together
A Rajput wedding sherwani is usually the most worked version of the garment you'll see: all-over zardozi or gota patti in gold and silver, a brocade ground in ivory, cream or a deep jewel tone, and buttons in gold or silver filigree. The effect is deliberate and it's old. These were clothes meant to announce a family, and they still do exactly that when they walk into a room.
For a Rajput sherwani we source the embroidery from specialist karigars, usually in Lucknow or Delhi, whose work stands up in close photographs. The panels come to us, and the cutting, construction and fitting happen here in Adyar. You get the embroiderer's craft and our tailoring in the same garment, which is the only sensible way to make one of these.
The baraat, and what changes for the reception
The baraat is where the groom's outfit does its real work. It's the most public moment of the wedding and the most heavily photographed, and the full sherwani with the safa, on a horse or in a decorated car, is the image everyone will remember. Plan the outfit around that moment specifically: daylight, a crowd, cameras at every angle and no chance to adjust anything once you set off.
By the reception most Rajput grooms change into something else: a rich silk bandhgala, a Jodhpuri in a complementary colour, or a plainer sherwani without the headwear. That's an honest acknowledgement that the baraat was the peak and the evening can sit slightly below it while still being grand. Two outfits planned together look far better than one outfit worn twice.
