Dressing for a Palace Wedding.

Udaipur, Jaipur, Jodhpur: venues that raise the bar on everyone who walks in.

Dressing for a Palace Wedding.

A palace or heritage hotel wedding in Rajasthan asks more of your wardrobe than any other Indian setting. The architecture does half the work and sets a standard you then have to meet. An ivory brocade sherwani with good embroidery, a fine Jodhpuri in rich cloth, or a fully canvassed suit in the best material you can stretch to: that's the floor, not the ceiling. An outfit that would pass at a hotel ballroom looks thin against sandstone and marble, and everyone looking at the photographs afterwards can see it.

The standard the building sets for you

Lake Palace in Udaipur, Umaid Bhawan in Jodhpur, Samode Haveli in Jaipur, Falaknuma in Hyderabad: these venues arrive with their grandeur already in place. Frescoes, marble, courtyards, scale. Whatever you wear gets measured against that backdrop by every camera in the building, and a merely adequate outfit will look exactly that.

What these venues reward is Indian formal wear at its richest. A heavily embroidered brocade sherwani that might feel like too much at a city hotel looks entirely at home in a painted hall or a stone courtyard. The building and the garment come out of the same tradition, so they read together instead of competing.

What to actually commission for a palace

For Indian dress, go to the top of whatever you've chosen: the heaviest brocade sherwani, the finest silk bandhgala, the most carefully embellished Jodhpuri. For Western dress, a fully canvassed bespoke suit in the best cloth on the shelf, a 150s or 160s worsted from Holland & Sherry or Loro Piana, cut properly and pressed properly. Morning coats have their place at the most formal palace weddings.

Think about the outdoor shots specifically. Gardens and courtyards at these venues produce the best photographs of the whole wedding, and an ivory sherwani against ochre sandstone is one of the great images in Indian wedding photography. If that's a picture you want, choose the colour with that wall in mind rather than deciding it in a showroom under white light.
