Suits That Have to Travel.

Udaipur, Bali, Tuscany or the Maldives: dressing for a wedding nowhere near home.

Suits That Have to Travel.

A destination wedding adds two problems to an ordinary commission. The suit has to survive a flight, and it has to perform in a climate it wasn't cut in. A suit for a December palace wedding in Udaipur and a suit for a March beach ceremony in the Maldives have almost nothing in common beyond the word suit. So when a destination commission starts at Sellers, the first two things we write down are the venue and the month. Everything else follows from those two lines.

Start with the climate, not the mood board

Where you're going and when settles the cloth before any aesthetic conversation begins. A Rajasthan palace in December is cool enough after dark and can take a mid-weight worsted or even a light flannel, both of which would be unwearable in Bali or the Maldives in any month of the year. Southeast Asia in March wants the lightest thing we can make: linen, fresco wool, or a tropical 150s worsted that lets air through in humidity.

Most Indian destination venues, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Goa, Coorg, the Kerala backwaters, need light, breathable cloth almost all year. Linen, which Western grooms tend to save for summer, is a sensible choice here for most of the calendar, and it looks right outdoors in a way a formal worsted never quite manages against sandstone and sunlight.

Packing a suit and getting it there in one piece

A well-made suit in good cloth travels better than a cheap one, which isn't a sales line but a property of the fibre. Fine worsted has enough natural spring to recover from a few hours folded. Linen creases, obviously, but it drops out fast if you hang it in a steamy bathroom. Both are reasonable choices for a wedding you've to fly to.

Carry it in a garment bag if you can. If it has to go in a case, turn the jacket half inside out through the shoulders, lay it flat on top and roll the trousers loosely around it. Then hang it the moment you land. A day on a hanger at room temperature takes most travel creases out of a good worsted, and a light steam sorts out linen. Don't leave any of this to the morning of the wedding.
