The Workshop

Where the work actually happens.

Cloth gets cut here, garments get sewn here, fittings happen here. All of it at 3 Sardar Patel Road.

Inside the Sellers workshop

Most shops keep the workshop out of sight. Ours is the point of the place. Walk in and you'll see cloth on the cutting table, half-made jackets on the stands, and the tailors who would make yours. The same hands cut our bespoke and take in the shirt you just picked off the rail. So what you can see being done here is what you're buying, whichever way you choose to buy it.

What you'll find at 3 Sardar Patel Road

We're on Sardar Patel Road in Adyar, and the shop is arranged around the work. A cloth room, with bunches sorted by weight and season. A cutting table, where patterns are drafted and cloth is marked and cut. A sewing area. A fitting room. And rails of ready-made from the brands Chennai families already buy — Van Heusen, Arrow, Louis Philippe, Raymond, Allen Solly, Blackberrys, Levi's. One shop, one team, all of it a few steps apart.

Come in on a weekday afternoon and there will be cloth on the table and work on the stands. Nothing is staged for visitors. That matters more than it sounds. If you buy a shirt here and want the sleeves shortened, the person doing it is standing ten feet away and spends the rest of his day cutting bespoke jackets. You can watch him chalk it. Not many shops in Chennai can say that, and it is the reason our customers stop shopping around.

The cloth room

The cloth room holds bunches from Holland & Sherry, Scabal, Dormeuil and Vitale Barberis Canonico for suiting; Thomas Mason, Alumo and David & John Anderson for shirting; and Indian silks and brocades for sherwanis, bandhgalas and kurtas. Everything is sorted by weight and by occasion — summer cloths together, the heavier winter pieces apart, evening cloths kept separate — so a conversation moves quickly from what you need to what will actually work in Chennai.

Choosing cloth is the decision that matters most, and it is the one you cannot make on a screen. Weight, hand, sheen, the way a length falls when you hold it off the edge of the table — none of that photographs. So we put it in your hands. Ten minutes with the bunches teaches you more about what you want than an hour of scrolling, which is why we would always rather you came in than emailed.

Open since 1997

Mukesh Bhambhani opened Sellers in 1997 and we have been at the same address ever since. Nearly thirty years in one spot does something for a tailoring shop that no amount of advertising can. Patterns stay on file. Families keep coming — we cut for fathers, and now we cut for their sons. And the team knows, in the way that only repetition teaches, how to fit the people who actually walk through this particular door.

None of that knowledge is written down. A cutter who has solved the same dropped-shoulder problem five hundred times solves it faster and better than one who has met it twice. Our senior tailors trained the younger ones the same way they were trained: at the bench, on real garments, being corrected. That is what "since 1997" is worth here. Not the date. The hands.

Coming in

We're open Monday to Saturday, 11am to 9.30pm. Walk in whenever you like; most people do. If you're commissioning something bespoke, or it's a wedding order, call ahead and we'll keep an hour clear so you aren't waiting around while we're with someone else.

The shop is at 3 Sardar Patel Road, Adyar, Chennai 600020. From Nungambakkam it is roughly twenty minutes, from Anna Nagar around thirty, from Velachery about forty, traffic permitting. There is street parking on Sardar Patel Road.

A first visit costs nothing and commits you to nothing. Give us an hour to ninety minutes if you want the full conversation — what you need it for, which cloth suits that, measurements if you decide to go ahead. If all you want is a trouser hemmed, that takes a few minutes and you can simply walk in for it.

Alterations

Bought here, altered here. Usually the same week.
