Sea Island is one of the rarest natural fibres still in commercial use. It is grown on a handful of islands in the Caribbean and South Atlantic, Barbados and Saint Kitts among them, in a small number of certified regions and nowhere else. What sets it apart is fibre length, fineness and a natural lustre that no other cotton comes near. Woven into shirting by Alumo in Switzerland, it produces cloth that behaves unlike any other shirt you have owned. Cool, smooth, closer to silk than cotton against the skin, with a sheen that catches light without ever looking flashy. It is the best shirt we make.
It comes down to the length of the fibre
Cotton is judged first and foremost on staple length. Long fibres, what the trade calls extra-long staple, spin into finer and stronger yarn with a smoother surface. Short fibres give you rougher yarn and coarser cloth, and no amount of finishing hides it. Sea Island has the longest staple of any cotton grown. Individual fibres can run to 45 millimetres or more, against 25 to 35 mm for Pima or Egyptian Giza, and 20 to 28 mm for ordinary American Upland.
All that length lets it be spun to extremely high thread counts, over 200 threads per centimetre, without losing strength. The yarn comes out smooth and almost silky, with a natural lustre that comes from those very long fibres lying so closely aligned. Woven and finished, the cloth has a surface smoothness and a cool dry handle you can identify blindfolded once you have felt it once.
Alumo, the Swiss mill behind the cloth
Alumo have been weaving fine shirting in Appenzell, Switzerland, since 1925. Their Sea Island programme is one of the most respected anywhere, and they are among the very few mills licensed by the West India Sea Island Cotton Association to use the name at all. That licence requires a certified chain of custody running from the specific growing regions right through to the finished cloth, which is why you cannot simply buy Sea Island cotton from anybody who claims to have it.
They weave it into several constructions: a plain poplin, a fine twill, a very light voile, and a satin-face for the dressiest shirts. All of them carry the same qualities, the smoothness, the cool handle, the lustre, and in the finer weights a translucency that has been judged carefully so it reads as luminous rather than see-through. The practical case for it here
There is a real argument for Sea Island in this climate that has nothing to do with showing off. Because the fibres are so smooth, the cloth lies flat against the skin with very little friction and very good airflow. In our humidity that means a shirt that feels noticeably cooler than a standard poplin of the same weight, because the smooth fibres are not trapping moisture or rubbing at the skin the way shorter-staple cotton does after four hours in a car and a meeting room.
The weights that work best here are Alumo's lighter Sea Island poplin and voile, somewhere around 80 to 90 gsm. Fine enough to be cool on a bad day, with enough body left to look like a professional shirt rather than something insubstantial. At that weight the lustre is there without taking over, so it reads as very good cloth rather than as evening wear.
