Oxford is a basket weave, a variation on plain weave where two threads run together as one in both directions. That gives you a soft, faintly pebbled surface with more body and more texture than poplin. It is heavier, softer and more informal, with a character that makes it the obvious partner for a button-down collar and the backbone of a smart-casual wardrobe. Why it feels different in the hand
That basket weave produces a surface unlike any other shirting. It is slightly raised and pebbly, so it absorbs light rather than bouncing it back, which is why Oxford always looks softer and more informal than the sheen of a poplin or twill. It drapes rather than standing up, it creases gently because the texture swallows the small wrinkles, and it feels like there is something there, which lighter shirtings never quite do.
It also stands up to laundering far better than the fine dress cloths. The heavier construction makes it tough, and it softens gradually with washing, which actually improves it. A well-worn Oxford has a broken-in quality that is half the pleasure of owning one. So if you want a shirt you will put on twice a week and wash twice a week without babying it, this is the cloth.
Oxford and the button-down collar
These two are so tied together that in classic American dressing they are treated as one garment, and the logic is both practical and visual. The informal character of Oxford matches the relaxed formality of a button-down exactly, and the soft drape of the cloth suits a collar that lies flat rather than standing away from the neck. Put a button-down collar on a crisp poplin and it always looks slightly confused about what it is.
The pairing also makes sense once you take laundry into account. An Oxford button-down goes from the wash, dried and lightly pressed, straight into wear, with none of the careful ironing and stiffening a proper dress shirt demands. It is the shirt for a man who wants to look well dressed without turning getting dressed into a ceremony, and who understands the difference between looking careless and looking at ease.
The four colours to start with
The classic Oxford colours come straight from where the cloth and the collar came from: white, pale blue, mid-blue and pink. White is the dressiest of the four, crisp enough to wear with a tie at work and easy enough to wear open under a blazer. Pale blue is the most universal, since it flatters nearly every complexion and sits under any suit colour. Mid-blue is more casual again. And pink in Oxford is a genuine pleasure, warmer and far more wearable than most men expect, particularly if you have olive or warm-toned skin. Try one before you decide against it.
