Ermenegildo Zegna founded his mill in 1910 in Trivero, in the mountains of Piedmont, one of the great suiting cloth regions of Italy. His idea from the start was to own the whole chain: the raw wool, the spinning, the weaving, the dyeing and the finishing, all under one operation. He built relationships with Merino growers in Australia, South Africa and South America, told them exactly how fine he wanted the fibre, and built a mill that could handle it with precision. More than a century on, Zegna suiting cloth is among the most respected material a bespoke tailor can order, and most people who walk in and ask for it already know the name.
Founded 1910, from fleece to finished cloth
Ermenegildo Zegna built his mill at Trivero, a small town in the Piedmontese hills above Biella, in 1910. Biella had been Italy's wool capital for centuries, and the water, the climate and the accumulated skill of its weaving families gave him exactly the conditions fine wool production needs.
What set him apart from his contemporaries was working out early that the cloth is only ever as good as the fibre it starts from. He went directly to the Merino sheep stations of Australia and South Africa, specified the micron count he would accept, and paid a premium for the best fleeces on offer. That sourcing habit gave Zegna a raw material advantage that has never really gone away.
The mill is still at Trivero, now a large operation supplying both Zegna's own fashion business and bespoke tailors around the world. The integration is real: they control the whole process from the choice of raw fleece to the finished fabric, which is something almost no other suiting cloth producer can honestly claim.
Trofeo, the benchmark fine wool
Trofeo is the flagship: fine merino at Super 150s and above, taken from the best fleeces in the Zegna supply chain and run through the full precision of their own mill. It has a particular character, a soft fluid drape with a quiet natural sheen that sets it apart from the more matte British cloths in the same quality band.
The range covers a good spread of weights and colours, from light summer cloths to standard suiting weights for cooler seasons. The lighter Trofeo constructions, around 210–230 gsm in Super 150s, give you a suit with drape and refinement right at the top of what you would sensibly wear every week.

Cool Effect, the Zegna made for heat
Cool Effect exists to solve one problem: how to make a proper formal suit in fine wool you can actually bear to wear in heat, without it looking like a compromise. Zegna get there through a combination of fibre specification and weave engineering, producing a lightweight cloth with much better breathability than the weight alone would suggest.
In Chennai, Cool Effect deserves a look alongside a high-twist such as Holland & Sherry Crispaire, and the VBC Tropical. All three solve the same problem differently: the high-twist through hard-twisted yarn, the VBC Tropical through weight, the Zegna through very fine fibre plus a specific weave construction. Which one suits you is a question of handle, surface and how you want the suit to read.
