Thomas Mason was founded in 1796 in Cumbria, in the English Lake District, and has been weaving fine shirting cotton for more than 225 years. The mill belongs to the Albini Group now but still produces under its own name, to the construction standards that made it the reference for English shirting. That last part is what actually justifies paying for one made shirt instead of buying three.
Founded 1796, and the soft water of the Lake District
Thomas Mason was established in the Lake District of England in 1796, when the English cotton weaving trade was gathering around the water-powered mills of the northern counties. The soft water of those streams was the point: water that leaves no mineral deposit in the cloth, so the natural qualities of fine cotton come through clean in the finished piece.
The mill ran independently for the best part of two centuries and built its name among the Savile Row and Jermyn Street shirtmakers who wanted that specific weight and finish. The Albini Group acquisition brought Italian technical know-how and the resources of a bigger textile operation into the process, while the character of the cloth and the English shirting tradition behind it stayed where they were.
You will not find Thomas Mason cloth in a retail shop. It goes to the bespoke shirtmakers and tailors who hold a relationship with the house, which is how it reaches our counter.
Two-fold and three-fold, and why the yarn beats the number
What separates Thomas Mason from cheap shirting is not the thread count on the label. It is how the threads themselves are built. Their principal collections use two-fold and three-fold yarns, spun from two or three fibres twisted together before weaving, where most commercial shirting uses single-fold.
You feel the difference in the third year, not the first week. A two-fold yarn gives a cloth more structural integrity, better resistance to pilling, and a surface that stays smooth through wash after wash instead of going fuzzy from the first laundering. For the same thread count it is a heavier cloth with more presence in the hand, and it takes a crisp press that no single-fold cotton will give you however hot the iron is.
For a bespoke shirt meant to last five to ten years of regular wearing and washing, that construction is not a luxury. It is the minimum specification that makes the shirt worth making.
Gold, Luxury and Royal
The range is organised by level. Gold is the foundation: fine two-fold Egyptian cotton in the standard constructions, poplin, twill, Oxford, end-on-end and herringbone. These are the everyday bespoke shirts, formal enough for the office, priced for shirts you will wear weekly, and built to last.
Luxury takes the same Egyptian cotton finer, with a higher thread count and a smoother surface, for shirts worn to more formal occasions or for anyone who simply wants the best cloth on their back. The Luxury poplin and fine twill have a smoothness against the skin that Gold approaches without quite matching.
Royal is the finest thing they make: Egyptian extra-long-staple cotton at their highest thread counts, finished to about the limit of what shirting cotton can be. These are for a shirt that is an occasion garment in its own right, the dress shirt for the wedding or the big ceremony, or for the customer who will not compromise at the shirting level.

The making follows our house standard: felled seams where they belong, buttons attached by hand, mother-of-pearl throughout. The cloth then does the rest, wearing and pressing correctly for years.
