Marzoni has been putting out Italian cloth since the 1950s, and its book turns over faster than most: several hundred new designs a year, weighted towards the wool-silk and wool-silk-linen constructions that Italian tailoring is known for. We carry it because the designs are good and the seasonal range is deep, and because a customer who wants something with a bit of surface and a bit of sheen usually finds it here first.
What Marzoni is, plainly
We would rather tell you this than have you find it out somewhere else. Marzoni is generally understood in the trade to be a fabric house rather than a single mill, specifying and putting out cloth made across the Italian weaving industry under its own name. That is a completely normal way to work. Several of the most respected names in British tailoring do exactly the same thing, and we say so on their pages too.
What it means in practice is that you are buying a house's judgement rather than one shed's looms. The people at Marzoni choose the constructions, set the specification and edit the collection. When that is done well, and here it is, the cloth is good and the range is wider than any one mill could offer.
What it also means is that we would not sell you Marzoni on the strength of a centuries-old weaving story, because that is not the story. We sell it on the cloth.
Wool-silk, and why it reads well here
The part of the Marzoni book we open most often is the wool-silk and wool-silk-linen end. Silk in the blend gives a quiet lustre that a pure worsted does not have, and linen gives a dry, slightly irregular surface. Both change how a jacket photographs, which matters more than people expect at an Indian wedding where the camera is on you for six hours.
These blends are also, sensibly, lighter than a full worsted of the same look. For a reception jacket or an evening suit worn in Chennai in a room full of people, that is not a small thing.
When we reach for Marzoni
This is an occasion book more than a boardroom one. If you want a plain navy business suit, we would point you at a worsted from one of the mills rather than here.
If you want a jacket with some character to it, something with surface and a bit of light in the cloth for a wedding, a reception or an evening that is not black tie, Marzoni is one of the first books we open. The designs turn over often enough that what you choose is unlikely to be on three other men in the room.
