Bespoke Tailor and Ready-Made Menswear for Velachery. Sellers, Adyar.

Velachery is a fast-growing residential and IT belt, with a lot of people working in the Taramani and OMR parks. Careers move quickly here and wardrobes have to keep up: office shirts that survive a Chennai summer, a first proper suit, something for the wedding season.

Mukesh Bhambhani opened Sellers in Adyar in 1997, and we've been at 3 Sardar Patel Road ever since. It's one store with two halves that work together: a bespoke workshop with our own master tailors, and a large ready-made floor carrying the brands you already wear.

That combination is why customers from Velachery make the trip. You can have a suit cut from scratch for a wedding, pick up six office shirts and two pairs of trousers off the rail on the same visit, and have every one of them altered by the same tailors who cut the bespoke. Usually within the week. Not sent out to someone down the road, not "close enough", not collected a fortnight later.

It's a half-hour drive, so make it worth the trip. Most Velachery families do it in one visit: ready-made for everyday, a bespoke suit on order, and every alteration done by our own tailors, usually the same week.

Two sides to the shop, and most families use both on the same visit.

Bespoke, cut here. Our tailors work from a pattern drafted for your body, in cloth you picked, with the details you asked for. Two-piece and three-piece suits, blazers, tuxedos and formal wear. Trousers matched to a suit or made on their own, flat front or pleated. Shirts in cotton poplin, twill, linen and blends, with the collar and cuff you want. Nothing here is a standard block nudged to fit.

Indian ethnic wear. Sherwani, bandhgala, Nehru jacket, bandi, kurta, achkan, Jodhpuri suit and indo-western. Raw silk, brocade, velvet or structured wool, depending on what the function calls for. Wedding parties are a big part of our year, and we're used to dressing eight or ten men from one family to the same standard.

Womenswear. Women's suits, blazers, trousers and structured jackets, cut the same way and fitted the same way. A blazer made for your shoulders does something no rack blazer manages, and most women who order one order a second.

The ready-made floor. Van Heusen, Arrow, Louis Philippe, Raymond, Allen Solly, Park Avenue, Blackberrys, Parx, Pepe Jeans, Levi's, Linen Club, J. Hampstead, Oxemberg and Jockey. Shirts, trousers, jackets, denim, ethnic and everyday basics across the sizes, so nobody in the family leaves empty-handed because we didn't have their size.

Alterations, and this is really the point. Anything you buy off our rail goes to the same tailors who cut our bespoke. Sleeves, waist, seat, length, shoulders, tapering. Usually the same week, often the same day for simple work. It's why a shirt bought here fits like it was meant for you, and the same shirt bought in a mall doesn't.

Growing families. School and college wear, first interview suits, clothes for boys who'll need the trousers let out in six months. We leave the allowance in for exactly that, and letting them out later costs you nothing much.

Bespoke means made to order from a pattern that's yours. It isn't a stock garment with the seams shifted about. Here's how a commission actually runs.

The first visit. Sixty to ninety minutes, usually. We talk about what you need it for, how often you'll wear it, and what's already in your cupboard. Then cloth. We pull the bunches, tell you how each one behaves in Chennai heat, in an air-conditioned office, or under wedding lights, and let you handle them before you decide anything.

Then measurements, between eighteen and twenty-four depending on the garment, and the pattern drafted from them. We keep both on file. Order again in three years and we start from your pattern rather than from scratch.

Details and price. Lapel, pockets, lining, buttons, a monogram if you want one. We confirm the price and the delivery date before you leave, so there are no surprises at collection.

Cutting and the fitting. Your cloth is cut to your pattern and put together with the seams still open. You try it on, our fitter marks the changes on the garment itself, and that's where the fit actually happens. Skip this stage and you get a good-looking suit that never quite sits right.

Finishing and collection. Collar stitched down, lining in, buttons on, and pressed with a damp cloth to set the shape. You try the finished garment before it leaves the shop. If something needs a nudge, we do it there rather than asking you to come back another day.

And if you're not ordering bespoke. Pick what you like off the floor, our tailor pins it in the trial room, and you collect it altered. If you're travelling in from Velachery, say so at the door and we'll push it through the same day wherever we can.

Cloth decides most of what a garment turns out to be. How it drapes, whether it holds a crease, how it feels in April in Chennai, how it looks after three years of wear. We spend more time on this than on anything else in the first visit, and we'd rather you handled the cloth than took our word for it.

For suiting we hold bunches from Holland & Sherry, Scabal, Vitale Barberis Canonico, Ermenegildo Zegna and Roger La Viale, alongside Raymond, Linen Club and J. Hampstead. Super 100s and 120s wools for suits you'll wear often, lighter tropical worsteds and linen blends for Chennai weather, and heavier cloth for customers who travel somewhere cold or need something for a winter function abroad.

For shirts, fine cotton poplin, twill, oxford, end-on-end, linen and cotton-linen blends, in plains, stripes and checks. Most of our regulars settle on two or three cloths they like and simply reorder them every year.

For ethnic wear we source raw silk, dupion, chanderi, brocade and structured wool from suppliers we've used for decades. A sherwani in real raw silk sits and ages nothing like one in polyester satin, and on the wedding day that difference shows up in every photograph.

We don't up-sell. If a mid-weight worsted does the job, we'll say so rather than move you to something twice the price that you'd wear twice a year. And if your money is better spent on three good shirts than one showpiece jacket, we'll tell you that too.

Most of the work in a jacket is invisible once it's on you. The canvas in the front, the way the collar sits down, how the shoulder is set. You can't see any of it, but it decides how the jacket moves and whether it still looks right in ten years.

Canvassed fronts. Our jackets are built on a canvas, so the front moulds to your chest with wear instead of staying flat and board-stiff. Fused fronts are quicker and cheaper, and they bubble at the lapel after a few dry cleans. We'd rather take the extra day.

Hand work where it counts. Collars stitched down and lapels padded by hand. On full commissions the buttonholes are worked by hand, and buttons are sewn with a thread shank so the jacket closes cleanly instead of pulling.

Pattern matching. On stripes, checks and glen plaids we match the pattern across the seams. It takes more cloth and more time, and nobody notices when it's done. Everybody notices when it isn't.

Room to alter later. We leave generous allowance at the seat, waist and chest, because bodies change and a good garment should outlast the year you bought it in. Bring it back and we'll let it out or take it in.

The same hands on both. The tailor who canvasses a bespoke jacket is the one who takes in a Van Heusen shirt or shortens a pair of Levi's for you. That's unusual in a shop this size, and it's the reason our ready-made customers stop shopping anywhere else.

The idea then was straightforward and it still holds: sell people clothes that fit them, make what can't be bought, and stand behind both. That's why the workshop and the brand floor sit in one building. Nobody should have to choose between the convenience of a shirt off the rail and the fit of one made for him.

Our tailors have been with us for years, several of them for most of the shop's life. The man drafting your pattern has drafted thousands. The one taking in your trousers on a Saturday afternoon has been doing the same job for two generations of the same family, which happens more often than you'd think in Adyar.

We've dressed families through school, college, first jobs, weddings, and their children's weddings. 4.5 star on Google reviews says most of them came back, and coming back is the only real measure of a tailor.

From Velachery, take Velachery Main Road north-west towards Guindy, then Sardar Patel Road into Adyar. You can also come through Pallikaranai and Taramani and approach from the east. We're at 3 Sardar Patel Road, Adyar.

We're open Monday to Saturday, 11am to 9.30pm, closed Sundays. If you're coming a long way, a weekday morning is quietest and you'll get the most time with a tailor. Saturday mornings work well for people who can't get away from the office during the week.

Walk in whenever you like, but call ahead if it's a first fitting, a wedding order, or the whole family coming together. Then the cloth is out, the sizes are pulled and a tailor is free when you arrive, instead of halfway through someone else's fitting.

Can we get everything done in one trip?

Usually, yes, and that's what we're set up for. Ready-made for the family gets altered while you're here, often the same day. A bespoke suit needs a fitting midway, so that's either a second short visit or a shipped garment. Tell us your dates before you travel and we'll build the plan around them.

Do you alter clothes bought off your rail?

Yes, and the same tailors who cut our bespoke do the work. Sleeves, waist, seat, length, shoulders. It's part of how we sell, not a favour, and it's normally finished within the week.

How long does a bespoke order take?

A suit takes four to six weeks with one fitting in between. A shirt takes two to three weeks. Ethnic wear takes four to eight, depending on the work involved. Wedding orders should start at least eight weeks before the date. We confirm the exact date at the first visit, based on what's already in the workshop.

Do you ship?

We ship a finished garment once it's been fitted and signed off. We don't ship un-fitted bespoke, because the fitting is the job. If something small needs correcting after it reaches you, send it back or bring it on your next trip and we'll sort it out.

Do you visit other cities?

No. The tailors, the cloth and the tools are all in Adyar, and the work is better for being done here. Come to us and we'll make the trip worth it.

Is there a minimum order?

None. Some customers come for one shirt, some for eleven outfits before a wedding. We're not the cheapest tailors in Chennai and we don't try to be, but you'll never be sold something you didn't come for.
