Material, size and reading the room
The most useful and most correct links are the plainest ones. A silver or gold oval or rectangle, around 15 mm long, in a satin finish rather than a bright polish. They work with every shirt colour, every suit and every tie you own. They are right in any formal setting, and they do the job of the French cuff without ever becoming the thing people look at.
Livelier links, enamel, stone, a novelty design, a family crest, belong in social and creative settings where the formality allows for something personal. A pair with a bit of meaning behind them, an initial, a family motif, a colour that means something to you, is not a distraction in the right room. It is a small piece of biography that only somebody close enough to shake your hand will ever see.
One thing people forget: the cuff has to suit the link. Too big a cuff and the links swim in it. Too small and they pull at the cloth every time you move.
